Thanks guys,
I didn't want to buy a center finder for 1 or 2 dowels, so I was going
to try the diameter lines when I finally remembered my geometry. I used
a compass set to approx. the radius and drew some intersecting arcs from
the outside of the dowel. Worked great.

Hi Wyndy,
There are 4 ways to find center of dowel. You can use Drafting plastic
circle template, steel center finder
http://hardwareaisle.thisoldhouse.com/2007/02/hook_line_and_s.html ,
center marker http://www.woodcraft.com/family.aspx?familyid=3036 or zero
zero center finder http://www.woodcraft.com/family.aspx?familyid=3046
Good luck happy carving
