If the dowel is small enough that you can roll it on the table with your
hand then put it up against something or in a crack so so that you can
roll it in place. Then hold a pencil point against the end as close to
center as you can estimate. Then roll the dowel and the pencil should
draw a very small cirlce around the dead center.

How do you find the center of a dowel? It seems like it should be
easy, but the answer is eluding me.
