Hey Hugh, I think you might find red cedar a good choice, I'm thinking that
would be a native wood for you. Mahogany is the choice wood for most of the
carved doors I've come across in my area though not a native wood. I
usually use marine spar varnish in several successive coats(3-5) just make sure it
is UV protectant
