I thought you would be swamped so I held my tounge. The Pacific Northwest Totems were typically carved in western red cedar or Alaska yellow cedar. Both are getting expensive. I would presume that eastern white cedar would be as durable for outside use. Black locust or any wood used to make fence posts would be ok. Clear finishes on these woods only retards the appearance of the aging process. Hope this helps Ray M

heh out-there--- its Hugh the skincarp again looking for the answer I asked on 26/3/07 regarding preferred wood for outdoor conservation signs and the desired preservative covering to be used----I only heard from Maura--&--Marcel and sort-of from Dick carter with a ? to Marcel----surely our list members can do better than that in an effort to help my Ontario conservation friend with his worthwhile attempt ---regards---Hugh(aka--skincarp)
