Hugh:
I have a carved name sign on my house that is 10 years old. I carved it out
of basswood, painted it with a combination of acrylics and water colors and
then sprayed it several time with a Krylon spray with a UV protector. It
has worked well and still looks pretty good but it will need painted again
pretty soon.
If you can get it, redwood would be a good choice. It is hard to come by in
my part of the country but may be more plentiful in Canada. You might also
look at White Cedar. A lot of the commercial sign carvers in the New
England states use white pine. I think the main thing is to protect the
wood with a good finish.
Maybe others can give you some good ideas.
Good luck with your sign(s).

heh out-there--- its Hugh the skincarp again looking for the answer I asked
on 26/3/07 regarding preferred wood for outdoor conservation signs and the
desired preservative covering to be used----I only heard from
Maura--&--Marcel and sort-of from Dick carter with a ? to Marcel----surely
our list members can do better than that in an effort to help my Ontario
conservation friend with his worthwhile attempt
