Jan's comment about the car alarm brought back a memory.
A few years ago at one of the "Carving Wildlife in West Yellowstone" seminars I set up camp in the national forest in a wooded area along Hebgon Lake. The location is not in an established campsite but is a great camping spot, right on the lake in a cove where the fishing is good. I always camp there, bring my canoe and enjoy some evening fishing after carving all day. This time my son Daniel joined me for the first couple of days to do some fishing. The camp is in a high occupancy area for grizzlies and no sooner had we set up camp than a ranger camp by to visit. He said a black bear with 2 cubs had been through the very spot the day before, a sow grizzly and cub were seen on the point across the cove from us (maybe a mile around the bank) and a boar grizzly was seen at a place by the lake 3-4 miles away. He just wanted to be sure we knew not to leave any food around. Just as I was about to fall asleep Dan popped up and asked if I had my car keys. When I said yes, he made me get them and give them to him and said that if he heard a bear outside he would push the panic button and sound the car alarm. Actually, there was no incident but I always thought that was a great idea and no doubt we slept better for it.
