Hi, Joe. Jack Miller here.
I've been teaching and preparing for the Woodcarver's Roundup in Evart.
I taught a class to a group of Women Woodworkers in the Harrisburg area
Woodcraft Store. The ladies were carving a nine inch trout fish decoy as
a starter project. I had a great time and so did the nine ladies who
attended according to feedback I got. I'm hoping that some of them will
do some more carving and thus join our carving community.
I'm also working on a caricature carving of my best friend who will be
retiring at the end of this school year. The carving will have a golf
club in one hand and a fishing rod in the other hand. I think it will be
a big success.
For Evart, I'm planning to bring a bunch of shorebirds cut out of
mahogany. I've just started carving this material for shorebirds. They
are remarkable finished with a clear natural finish. On the models I
have done I have used copper wire for legs and mounted the bird on a
piece of driftwood.
Of course I always have fifty or more carving that are in various stages
of completion. This winter I taught classes on carving the tufted
titmouse and also a miniature mourning dove decorative carving.
All this keeps me busy, but I love every minute of it, especially the
teaching part.
