Chris,
I am also new to the carving. I went to a show of Olgleby Woodcarvers
Wheeling, Wv. in Sept. of 96. Went to club meeting next Monday evening and am in
love with my new found creative side. First of all don't be confused. Just pick
up some wood and try. The first won't look like your second or your 100th. My
first was a dolphin. But I practiced making a smooth ball out of a square
block of wood. If a group meets close to you go. They have alot of your
patterns and blanks and they are so eager to share there knowledge. Look online for
classes. I have learned so much from others. And ChipChats and other carving
books and magazines I read cover to cover. Our club sells old copies for a
quarter.Coloring books have simple shapes you can start with also. Pick up a teddy
bear and copy the basic design. Just enjoy yourself.
Someone told me once you can't worry if you sing. Well carving is my
singing. I attended the Dayton show last week and I have to agree it was amazing
and all these folks started just like you and I. Hope I've helped. Keep in
touch if I can be of any help. Renda
P.S. Don't buy alot of knives etc. Find a good comfortable knife.I love my
Dunkle detail knife. And I started on the set the club had for beginners that
was about $30 that had 7 mixed pieces a v-tool and gouge that fit into the same
handle.) As you get better and find your niche you can add on one at a time.
