Hi all,
Thanks again for all your comments and help, I appreciate it. As for the whale carving I am doing...I am not quite sure how to go about rounding it off more and getting rid of flat surfaces...as the wood doesn't really have any corners left and wood isn't terribly thick its spruce too I believe and does splinter quite easily. I would love any ideas anyone has for continuing with it. And you are right Donna I was using a V at first instead of the rounded gouge....wasn't sure which tool I needed to use at first but found out fast rounded worked soooo much better.
As for the relief I am doing it is on 1/4" Basswood so I don't wanna go too deep and gouge thru it. I am eventually going to round it into an approximate oval to be used on my mother in laws xmas gift which is a scrapbook my wife is making for her so I am going to glue it to the front cover of book.
As for my tools I just bought them off of eBay so they probably are not so sharp and they are a Chinese set. I don't have a strop or sharpener yet as I have already spent more then I should have....yikes! if my wife finds out she'll never let me carve again...LOL!!! I have bought another 11 piece set from FindingKing.com off eBay now it looks to be a pretty nice set but I have been waiting now 21 days for item to come from Mesa, Arizona. I wish I could meet up with some of you all and you guys could show me how to properly sharpen my tools cus I have no clue. My dad carves and he did give me a piece of leather just not sure what to do with it...LOL I'M A TOTAL NOOB!!! Doesn't it show?

Jan the Woodbutcher I may have to come see you sooner rather then later to help me out!!! Thanks again for getting me started you are 1 in a million :)

So I guess until I find out whether my tools are sharp enough my carvings may be on hold :(
So any more comments and help will be greatly appreciated as always
See ya guys soon
