Chris,
  The leather is for stropping the edges of tools. Drag them backward along 
the leather (gouges and v-tools.) holding finger on knife blade flatly take 
knife up strop about three times and turn over and repeat. 
   Good job on carving. I haven't done relief yet so your ahead of me there. 
On the whale try taking about an inch of wood to a rounded edge around entire 
carving and it will give you more texture.
