The best wood for the arrow would probably be basswood and as Steve
suggested would be to compress while dry and then wet after insertion.
Usually the basswood will expand to quick when wet and you will be
unable to get it thru the hole. For the cage, you would soak the cage
for several minutes in water (doesnot need to be hot) then insert the
ball while wet. The opening would be about 1.5 inches and watch the
grain to use the stronger side. The cage can be basswood or butternut
in a 2x2x 3 or longer. The 2" measurement can be slightly larger
without causing any problem.
