I just recently learned of the passing of Chris Effrem, one of the
pioneers in wood carving in North America. Chris came to the US in 1950 and
started a woodcarving shop in Minneapolis where he practiced and taught
traditional carving techniques. He was very active in the National
Woodcarvers Association and served as vice president from 1975-82.
His classes attracted students from throughout the United States; he
served as a judge in numerous carving competitions; and he gave
presentations around the nation and region to promote the art of
woodcarving. Two sons, George and Timothy, are continuing their father's
legacy, running woodcarving businesses of their own that grew out of Chris's
business. George has the Wood Carvers' Store and School in Minneapolis, and
Timothy runs Wood Carvers Supply out of Englewood, Florida.
Chris died on September 29 at age 83. He leaves a splendid legacy for
all of us in woodcarving. With Chris's passing the art of woodcarving has
lost a champion!
