I second the first reply, diluted linseed oil mixed with an oil based spar
varnish will do nicely. Then when it is finished being painted, enamels or
oil paints only, then a few coats of an oil based spar varnish followed by a
couple coats of spar urethane seems to work nicely. I have a sign that was
placed on a tree up in the northernmost regions of Canada that was finished this
way 4 years ago and is still going strong. I vote for no bondo for the
cracks as I think that would be disastrous in a few years.
