[Woodcarver] What have you been working on?

Hi Steve,

After my class with Jan last year,  I went thru the same exercise you are doing.   I went up to the Amish sawmill and tried to get something of that size.   The only thing he had was cottonwood.   Come back in a week he said and I will have what you want.   I got enough for three chairs for about $23.00.   Have carved one and someday will care the rest.   Not quite as nice as the wood Jan brought to Joe's but not bad either.   Neither have been outside as neither have a finish on them but they look great in my shop.

Did not experience crushing but it is more prone to being stringy or leaving feathers than Jan's wood or basswood.   Have carved a bunch of cottonwood bark but this was the first for me with cottonwood planks.
Couldn't pass up the possibility it would carve for that price.

As long as you asked:

I am trying to do some chairs like Jan's.  Large wood pieces like Jan 
uses, 2 x 16's are not available where I live.  I tried to glue 2x8's 
together.  I tried pressure treated green without the arsnic,  but the 
wood is very soft and will not carve in the cross grain very well.  So 
now I am trying western red cedar.  Also not good in the cross grain.  
Yes, my tools are sharp,  but the wood seams to crush.
    Does anyone have any experience carving red cedar?
What did you do in the cross grain?  I am trying to do hair on the wood 
spirits.  I also did a mermaid in the green wood.
