The Lancaster County Woodcarvers are actively preparing for their 35th Woodcarving and Wildlife Art Festival coming up at Millersville University's Student Memorial Center on March 8th and 9th. We will be sharing the Festival from 10 to 5 on Saturday and 10 to 4 on Sunday. There is free parking and a $5.00 admission charge.
Members are carving and donating items for the Noah's Arks ( one as a toy for children, and one for displaying) which are being raffled off for SOAR, "Supporting Our American Recruits," a charity for soldiers. A lady who works with SOAR, has a son in Afghanistan and a daughter-in-law in Kuwait. She thanked the club for including them in our event. SOAR will sell patriotic picture frames and hand out pins to any vets that come by. One can check them out at their website: http://www.supportouramericanrecruits.com/4436.html.
Carvers in the club are also carving and donating items for the hourly door prizes.
We are very excited about our Featured / Guest Carver for the festival, Floyd Rhadigan of Saline, Michigan. Rhadigan is a member of Caricature Carvers of America. Rhadigan won the Best of Show in the 2005 CCA Carving Competition and then was invited to become a member of CCA.
We have also invited some other artists, including: Dennis Thorton of Guilford, New York showing and demonstrating his Caricature carvings (Dennis is also a member of the CCA since 2000); Herlene Frank Iobst showing and demonstrating her talent in Alpine Relief carving; and Jim Sebring displaying and demonstrating his vast talent and examples in Tramp Art.
We are glad that our sister club, American National Cane Club (ANCC), will also have an exhibit of carved canes at our Festival.
Many of our members will be entering our competition Saturday morning. After the judging, From 10 a.m. to Noon on Saturday the winners and all the items entered in the competition will be displayed in a special area for Festival attendees and exhibitors to see the talent and variety of entries. Then the items will be with the exhibitors at their respective exhibits or on our club table.
At various points in the Festival there will be special demonstrations and seminars provided by our guest carvers and by several of our own club members. Club members are anxious to exhibit their carvings and/or wildlife art and even more anxious to share their experiences and opinions and tips about carving. Some us carvers will be actively carving during the Festival.
Many original items will be available for purchase from the artists. Vendors will also be selling carving tools and supplies and books and wood.
In the midst of our planning and hosting this festival, the Lancaster County Woodcarvers are teaching some home schooled students to carve. We are also planning another beginner's carver instruction day at the Lancaster Parks' Environmental Center with dates still being negotiated. We are also planning some seminars for woodcarvers including one with Floyd Rhadigan after our festival.
Lancaster County Woodcarvers meet every month on the third Tuesday at the Brownstown Campus of the Lancaster County Career and Technical Center at 7:00 p.m. Visitor and interested carvers are welcome to attend and check out the club.
