[Woodcarver] dripple and band saw question

There are two things to consider one the maximum thickness you can cut, the other is the maximum width you can cut.
I believe the most common band saws are Delta 14" and Jet 14". The 14" is wheel size, which is slightly larger than the maximum width you can cut. Both have a standard 6" maximum thickness. You can get a 6" riser for both, and that will get you 12" thickness maximum.
Another consideration is circle radius, the smaller the blade the tighter circle you can cut. The smallest blades are hard to find for 14" with riser. However, I think the average size for carvers is 3/16" or 1/4".
My experience is with a Jet 14" with riser. I use a 1/8" blade for most cut out work, both 2D and 3D cutouts. When the thickness is less than 1" I'll often use the scroll saw instead of the band saw, depending on the complexity of the cutout.
So there you have my dripple on band saws.
