And all the time I thought that you flipped them and stuck them in the wall --just like the guy at the circus. That way the sharp end is not exposed and they don't stay too sharp very long.

Dan, I heard it differently, more as an East-West phenomena. The Eastern carvers supposedly set the tools down with the handles towards them. http://www.philtourism.com/bigimages/bhyh_wood_carver.jpg

Western carvers set the tools down on the bench with blades facing them. http://www.4crucifix.com/images/carved/carverdetail.jpg

Such broad generalizations are pretty iffy, though many pictures I've seen seem to support this.

I like bench carving as I'm not agile enough to hold carving in place by sitting on it

Ivan,

I always thought that if you placed the tools on the bench with the sharp end facing you, it meant you were trained in Europe. If the sharp end faced away, it meant you were trained in the US. Is this true?
