As the list is very quiet at the moment I thought this may prompt some
discussion.

The article on canes for vets in the current Chip Chats shows them all as
painted.
I know it is traditional in the US to paint carvings but walking sticks are
dropped very regularly so will they not finish up very chipped and not look
the best.
There must be some nice woods in US that don't need painting.

Over the years I have carved dozens of sticks all for people who need them.
The most common request is for a stick that do not stand out and attrack
attention.
They enjoy having a nice carved one but not if it is causes people to look
at it.
Again a nice dark wood would suit better than a brightly painted one.

That has been my experience.
