is it better/more practical to buy a mallet or to make one myself? And if I
make one, are there any sage words of advice that you might be able to share
with me?

it is better to make your own but I would buy a wood is good mallet first,
then you will have all the time in the world to perfect making one on the
lathe. Things to consider, weight(heavier is not always better) and comfort of
handle
