In teaching classes with kids, I used Speedball linoleum cutters, which consisted of a vee and a couple of small gouges.
To save cost, I drilled holes in a 1/2 dowel the size of the gouges and epoxied the ends. I purchased a several sets for around $4.00 a set. If you want a handle the costs go up to around $8.00.

They can be sharpened with wet/dry sandpaper to enhance their performance.
They not Stubia or Pfiel, but the kids could use them and they performed well for me.
Hope this helps.
Blessings and Peace

Hi group,
Was fortunate to be asked to teach beginning carving to a group of
children last summer. They were so excited about their new hobby -
as were the parents! - so they have rounded up two more beginner
classes for me as well as last years group wanting to come back again.
Have projects picked out for the beginners using just a knife.
The "advanced" beginner class was wondering about adding another
tool. Guess I'd suggest two - a gouge and a v-tool - but I know that
cost is a factor. These kids are 9 to 14 years old.
My questions:
Do any of you have patterns simple enough for this age group that
you're willing to share?
(Saw Marcia Berkall's article in Carving Mag. and thought the
pretzel and the snowman were good projects)
Would you add another tool at this point or just stick to the knife?
What additional tool would you add?
Thanks for any help you can give. These kids are so excited and I'm
please to be assisting in adding to the "new generation" of carvers.
