[Woodcarver] Carving letters in oak boards

Thanks to all for the very helpful suggestions. 
I will probably go the mechanical rather than hand carving route because there are already quite a few signs in the park, and they appear to have been done mechanically (although we don't know who did them, which is why I got involved). 
Joe Dillett suggested a RotoZip and said that it would not be difficult to use. Is it likely to be easier than using a router? I have not used either and was told that it would be almost impossible to control a router without a template. If I use the RotoZip, I assume I should get the router attachment for it. Correct?
