Thanks, Sam!!! The Virtual Porch was definitely a special
project. I distinctly remember how the whole thing started....
There was a conversation that involved several people about how great
the list was and how it felt like a bunch of friends sitting around
on a porch carving. Someone said, "Let's call it the Virtual
Porch"...and I believe it was John Jellies who said, "Hey, Let's
CARVE the Virtual Porch". It was then decided that it would travel
to some shows for a while then find its permanent home with Bill Judt
as a thank-you for all the work he did for us and the list. The
spirit of the "Porch" was amazing. I was one of the lucky ones to
have it here for our annual Downeast Show. The carvings came from
all over and were all just wonderful!!! Everyone did put a lot of
thought into their little "self portraits". The keyboard and
computer-shaped porch were awesome!. The problem became one of
logistics...crate, shipping. It was too big for UPS so it had to be
trucked, which can be costly, or moved from place to place by
individuals across the country. I'm glad I had a van at the time!
Mike Parker came to Maine for our show and brought the "Porch" back
to Virginia with him. It somehow found its way back to Oregon and as
Byron said earlier, Cliff and Avril Page delivered it to Bill Judt.
It's hard to believe that was in 1999...LONG time ago.
I don't remember when I joined the List...but I do remember there was
a lot of excitement when membership reached 150...so, although I
wasn't in the first 100 that I know of, I did join pretty early
on. It's been a fun road!!
