In the interest of getting some discussion I'd like to let the list
members know about some of my plans for the summer. First of all I am
applying in there next few days to become an instructor at the John C.
Campbell Folk Art School in Brasstown, North Carolina. I expect to be
retired from my full time Director of Guidance position after next school
year and I hope to devote some more time to teaching this wonderful art
form. Next month I'll be travelling to Evart Michigan for the
Woodcarvers Roundup. The program is offered during the second week in
June. For anyone interested in learning a new skill in carving or to
developing their present skills, this is a great opportunity. There are
typically 50 or more instructors there volunteering their time to teach
carving in all its facets. The web site WoodcarversRouindup.com should
get you more information. The only cost for instruction is the cost of
blanks and there are some of the best instructors in the country offering
their talents.
In mid July I'll be teaching a class on rainbow trout fish decoys in
Harrisburg PA and would welcome any list members to contact me or the
Woodcraft Store about attending the class.
A fortnight later is the Northeast Woodcarvers Roundup in Honesdale, PA.
Honesdale is located near Scranton, in the northeast corner of
Pennsylvania. There are twenty five or so instructors lined up for this
seminar program which is also free except for the cost of blanks. The
roundup, modelled on the Evart one, is smaller than Evart but just as
spirited and friendly. George and Ann Reinfried and I coordinate this
program. I would be happy to forward any requests for information to
George and Ann, the real workers.
Over Labor Day weekend I'm travelling to Chincoteague Virginia to exhibit
my carvings at a show in one of the hotbeds of bird carving on the East
Coast. I've never attended this show, but I am really looking forward to
going. One of my carving friends is Bob Hudson, grandson to Ira Hudson,
one of the masters of decoy carving who lived in Chincoteague.
Finally in October the Mystic (CN) woodcarvers sponsor a seminar in Rhode
Island at a campus of the University of Rhode Island. There will;l be
about ten instructors , and though there is a charge for the seminar,
this charge carvers housing and food for the weekend, The program is
conducted each Columbus day weekend. Again contact me for info on this
program if you are interested in this or any other of the programs I've
listed.
Happy carving to all and I hope to meet up with some of you this summer
in my travels.
