You have been an inspiration to me and many others and although you are passing the torch for managing the list I hope to continue to use it to share your expertise and assistance. I am also very pleased with your choice of Matt Kelley as your successor. Although he might not know it, some years ago Matt helped me get started in carving via my joining one of his friendship cane groups - what a challenge it was to get that little carving done and sent out each month! I later had the good fortune to meet Matt via our attending a carving class with Ivan Willock. Thanks Matt for being willing to takeover this additional service to the carving community. Like it is and has been for Bill, your service is very much appreciated. Your Celtic Knot love spoon was a challenging project that you did a fantastic job on. The flower love spoon was one of my first projects- and I did the back too. As you discovered, the back just adds to the fun. Here is a link to where I have mine: http://www.woodworks-by-donna.com/woodcarvings.html Keep up the good work and the sky is the limit to what you can do. Maybe some in your club would like to make some of the Eagle canes. Mine is on that same page. It is a worthwhile project, especially with so many retired military folks. Hopefully this will happen over the weekend, and without any disruption to List postings. Each and every subscriber currently on this List will continue to be subscribed, as the List is simply changing hands, not starting over again. In fact the new owner uses the same ISP as the List and is able to have the List transfered to his account from mine. Sweet! This List was started roughly 12 years ago and has been attached to 4 List servers over that time. The current List Server, located at Pair.com, has been essentially trouble free and completely reliable. I expect the same quality service for the new owner. It has been an immense privilege to be owner/administrator for this List over the years. Through the List I've been able - like yourselves - to be connected to hundreds of carvers world-wide, sharing ideas, encouragement and friendship. Without this List my experience as a carver would have been isolated from the rest of the carving community. I've considered this List to be a gift to me from God and thus worthy of good stewardship. My hope is that the List prospers under the hand of another good steward. I want to thank each and every carver with whom I've had the privilege to meet and know over the years for your friendship and camaraderie. I will continue to be a regular subscriber to this List, for sure, and you will see my postings from time to time. Now for the announcement of who will be the new List owner.... It is the one and only Matt Kelley - womeditor at comcast.net Look forward to his initial postings, which I'm sure will inform you all on his vision for the future of this List. To introduce myself I'll start by telling you I'm really new to wood carving but I am totally engrossed with it. I'm a retired US Marine, I retired in 1970 so you know I've got some years behind me. After the Corps I've been a builder, and an Architect without portfolio. Last year my wife learned that our county's Senior Center had an experienced wood carver who volunteered time showing seniors how to carve. She suggested, as wives do, that I try my hand at wood carving. I had never considered wood carving as something I would be interested in but I went to meet the the gentleman anyway. In less than two hours he had me convinced I could do an acceptable job of making a block of wood look like a European Santa Clause. That was in November 2007. Now I have small caricatures, relief's, a few dozen love spoons, wood spirits and Santa pin scattered around the nation. Inexpensive Christmas presents that inspire friends and family to encourage me. I been reading every wood carving article I get my hands on. I've converted my small shop into a wood carving studio. I pursue other hobbies too but one might think me a compulsive obsessive when it comes to wood carving.... I've developed a web page showing our small Senior Carvers Group and included a link to my personal web page showing carvings I have completed. I've entered two completions sofar, one won second place in our county fair. My name is Richard Luke. While I have been "Whittlin' " since I was a small child, it wasn't until about two months ago that I became actively involved in woodcarving. I am a Desert Storm Veteran ( I served as an Army Medic, working in the Landstuhl, Germany Emergency Department). I also have PTSD, and part of my therapy is attending a woodcarving class about once a week ( The VA in Salt Lake City has an EXCELLENT Recreational Therapy program!) . Our instructor, Tom Hollingswoth, has been Carving since he was a small child as well, but he is in his 60s! He has won First Place ribbons at the Utah State Fair for his woodcarving. I am sill learning, and when I have a finished piece to show, I'll post it to the list. I know that I appreciate all the information I get from this list and I also pass the information on to my fellow Veterans in the program. Thanks for puttin' up with my ramblings. For informative and fun REAL TIME conversations with a number of the carvers on "The List", come to the Woodcarver chats. We don't always talk about carving, but if anyone has a question or comment, we can get serious in a hurry. Get to know the people behind the names. And bring you carving questions with you!!! We meet on Wednesday nights at 9:30 PM Eastern and on Sundays at 4:30 PM Eastern. If you are NOT using an IRC chat program, I think you will like these simplified instructions!!! Just click on one of the links below...either will take you directly to #Woodcarverchat http://www.starlink-irc.org/java/java_williamslake.html?chan=#Woodcarverchat http://www.starlink-irc.org/java/java_stopover.html?chan=#woodcarverchat This may take a LONG time to load!!!!!!! Don't give up. When it finally does load, you will be asked to type in a nickname.....then click connect, and wait a little bit longer. The chat screen will open. Type something in the narrow horizontal space just below the chat screen and hit you enter key. Nothing to it! :) If you are using WebTV or still have trouble getting there, one of these links will work...we just save them as a last resort in case all other links don't work: http://63.79.14.90/cgi-bin/irc.cgi http://cobra-ip1.vipershells.com/cgi-bin/irc.cgi http://stopover.ky.us.starlink-irc.org/cgi-bin/irc.cgi (This one will have the fastest connection) Type in a nickname where it says"nickname"i Where is says, "channel", type in #woodcarverchat (don't forget the #). ******* If you are using an mIRC chat program: 1. Log onto your ISP. 2. Open mIRC. You should see a box "mIRC Options". If you don't then click on View then on "Options" Fill in the information there...you do NOT have to put in your real name or email address. For security purposes, make them up. Do put in the nickname you want and an alternative. 4. Click on the button with the sunburst icon, just to the right of the button that says, "Connect to Server". Where it says "IRC Network", scroll down until you see "Starlink-IRC" and highlight that so it shows in the window. There is also a Starlink network, so make sure that the one you select has the "IRC" after it. Now click on the arrow next to the IRC server window. That will list a number of Starlink-IRC servers....select one of them. The Starlink-IRC random server will automatically pick one of the servers for you, so you can use that one. With one of the Starlink-IRC servers in the window, click on "Connect to Server" If the Starlink Random Server is not in your mirc program you can add it: Click the "add" button. Where it says "Description" type "Starlink Random Server" Where it says "IRC Server" type IRC.STARLINK-IRC.ORG Port should be 6664,6665,6666,6667,6668,6669 (all of those with no spaces between them) and "Group" is Starlink-IRC 5. Once connected, you'll see lots of scrolling text. When that stops, type /join #Woodcarverchat in the window at the bottom and hit your "enter" key. (you need the / and #, and Woodcarverchat must be spelled exactly right) I have put these instructions on a web page with direct links at http://artwebmaine.com/woodcarverchat.html You may want to bookmark it. ******* See you there! Alex won by consistently drilling an 11/16 hole clear through a 1-inch diameter, 4-foot long, wood dowel, from one end using only hand tools, without breaking out the side. Steve Kline won second place being able to drill about 2-1/2 feet before breaking out the side. The process had to be repeatable and they had to bring a video tape of them doing it. I'm not a bird carver but the skills learned in your class cross over into other areas of art and carving. I just restored a plaster statue, what was in a fire, for a church. After using Bondo to glue all the pieces together I had a devil of a time matching the colors. Your seminar would be very helpful for any type of painting. Please keep us posted. Message-ID: <490F723F.00002C.05856@RICHARD-PC> Due to the overwhelming number of welcoming e-mails I received over the weekend I feel I'm going to enjoy being here among friends. Thanks to you all. I read every e-mail and tried to visit every web sights but I know I may have missed some. Too much information to digest all at once. Many interesting carvings some are beyond my current skill level.... But I have high hopes! As our head wood carver tells us, we may make some designer fire wood along the way but each mistake is a learning experience. From seeing so many projects in such a short time I became confused and lost which carvings came from which woodcarver. My first attempt at going back to find a particular project failed. I know there were some great Santa eggs that would make a hit with friends and family. Thought 'I can do a few of those as gift Christmas tree ornaments. Well I haven't found them yet. So hear my plea. Would whoever has them on their web page be kind enough to send me their URL again? Thanks. ?Richard Woodcarver http://home.rr.com/woodcarver -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The seminar will be held at Pavilion 22 of the Lancaster County Parks, south of Lancaster City. One can register to spend the two days with one of the four carvers: Pete LeClair, Jan Oegema, Bob Stadtlander, or Don Dearolf. Pete, author of three books, Carving Caricature Heads & Faces, Carving Caricature Figures from Scratch and Carving Caricature Busts, is a retired Operating Engineer, living in Gardner, Massachusetts. He began carving caricatures in 1973. In 1978 he started teaching carving in the adult education system in the city of Fitchburg, MA. In 1990 he started showing his caricatures at woodcarving shows, which led to requests to teach seminars throughout this country and Australia. Visit Pete at the CCA website: http://www.cca-carvers.org/leclair.html Peter will be leading a seminar on Bottle-Top Caricature Jan is from Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada. Jan is a wonderful teacher - he's talented, patient, and has a great sense of humour. Jan?s website is www.janscarvingstudio.com Jan will be leading a seminar on Lawn Chair Carving Bob Stadtlander, a resident of Wellsville, New York, has been carving since 1990. He is mostly self taught, but has taken several courses offered by other well known carvers. He specializes in relief carving, mostly in wood 2" thick or less. Robert?s fascination for woodcarving started at a very young age, however after being influenced by his family?s participation in the woodcarving world, he started carving as a hobby. After carving for approximately fifteen years, Robert now specializes in scenic relief carving relying on shadow, light, and perspective to give his carvings a life-like feel. Bob?s website is http://www.stadtlandercarvings.com/index.htm Bob will be leading a seminar on Relief Carving. Don is a member of the Lancaster County WoodCarvers. Don has been a Caricature Carver. Over the last two years Don has lead several seminars for the Lancaster County WoodCarvers and at the Cherry Ridge NorthEast WoodCarvers Round Up. These seminars have demonstrated his teaching skills on top of his carving skills and his creativity. Don will be leading a seminar on caricature carving of perhaps a Amish man. Pre-Registration is required since there is limited openings for personal carving attention by the instructor. Registration form and the costs will soon be announced. Check our website for more details as we make them: www.lancarvers.com. Registration forms will be available to download from our website. The Cost will be determined soon and will include the cost of the blank / material for the two days with one of the carvers. Information and registration form are also available by contacting Lancaster County WoodCarvers, Attn: Nancy Kovarovic, P.O. I haven't posted photos of my carvings either but I will get round to it one of these days. It's been nice knowing that another Greek, nearer to my "niche" is in woodcarving and a member of this list. We shall keep in touch. It is not quite done, but I thought some of you may be interested in looking at it. I haven't done faces much- hardly at all, and I didn't realize how difficult they are. I will post again when it is done. It has been a great learning experience for me, so I thought I'd share it with other carvers. http://portraitcarving.blogspot.com/ Donna Menke http://www.woodworks-by-donna.com Author: The Ultimate Band Saw Box Book From sarolyn at accn.org Tue Nov 11 19:28:37 2008 From: sarolyn at accn.org (Sally Nye) Date: Tue, 11 Nov 2008 19:28:37 -0500 Subject: [Woodcarver] Fan carver on Woodwright's Shop Message-ID: Roy Underhill's PBS show, Woodwright's Shop, will feature Lumberjack fan-carving. One of my favorite things thus far has been warlking sticks (mostly woodspirit type carvings,) and recently, a friend gave me a piece of osage orange in the shape of a perfect walking stick that he told me to do with what I wanted. Well, the piece has been aging for quite awhile (5 years) and is hard as a rock. I was thinking of trying a draw knife then doing some sanding to get to the darker wood. I had no intention to dull my carving knives down on this piece, so I was thinking of just sanding and polishing and putting a good finish on it. Any feedback or ideas? I have carved it and yes I did needed to sharpen my tools during and after the process. It was well worth the journey. I love getting a feel of the wood and for me chisels are the best way to do that. At first osage orange makes you think that it's fighting back but after you get into it you realize its hard abrasive qualities are its true value, which is the strength. I have found no way to keep the bright gold color. It will turn brown with time. Joe Dillett The Carving Shop 645 E. Peter ******************************* Hi Peter, I know we are blessed here in America to have plenty of delicious softer carving wood. You folks in Australia got to be tough to carve the hard timber that grows there. When turning Osage orange on a lathe I need to cover my hand to keep from getting burned, stiffen up the angle of my turning tool and still need to sharpen every few minutes. I can't imagine turning that maler. That's awesome hard stuff and very hard on tools. I hope you are all feeling better. We sure would love for you to come back and visit us. I don't care for black backgrounds, and I'd like to see the stations less dark. When I clicked on the first station to see it bigger I was sent to the top of the page and had to scroll down to see the enlargement. That was awkward. I have all three and use them whenever I'm carving a bird. Another good resource is online photographs of birds. There are hundreds of photos from all different angles so that you can figure out where the legs should insert. If you can find a good anatomical drawing of your specific bird anatomy that would help too. I don't think there is a rule of thumb about how legs attach. The skeleton dictates a lot, but attitude and feathering can make things look a lot different. Admittedly, it's early, but something inside told us to get it out sooner than later. Perhaps this will allow some of you extra time to write back and share your year with us. Our Christmas letter is located at the following link: http://www.wwwoodcarver.com/Christmas2008/Christmas_2008.html There is a photo album attached to the letter, which gives you a different view of our year. Hope to hear from many of you. Merry Christmas, Bill and Deb Judt bjudt at sasktel.net Billy Graham's Prayer: 'Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask your forgiveness and to seek your direction and guidance. We know Your Word says, 'Woe to those who call evil good,' but that is exactly what we have done. We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and reversed our values. We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery. We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare. We have killed our unborn and called it choice. We have shot abortionists and called it justifiable. We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building self esteem. We have abused power and called it politics. We have coveted our neighbor's possessions and called it ambition. We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of expression. We have ridiculed the time-honored values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment. Search us, Oh God, and know our hearts today; cleanse us from every sin and Set us free. You and your boys sure can get a lot done. Our son just left after being with us for a week and we about worked him to death. We have a 12/12 roof with concrete barrel tiles that is impossible to walk on, but after 25 years we had to do some repairs and some painting. The impossible just took a little longer- and it required someone less than 60 years old. Good thing we had kids- eh? Join in on the fun!!!
