Three excellent books on the subject of song bird carving are by Ernest Muehlmatt, Lori Corbett, and
Rosalyn Leach Daisey. I have all three and use them whenever I'm carving a bird. Another good resource is online photographs of birds. There are hundreds of photos from all different angles so that you can figure out where the legs should insert. If you can find a good anatomical drawing of your specific bird anatomy that would help too.
I don't think there is a rule of thumb about how legs attach. The skeleton dictates a lot, but attitude and feathering can make things look a lot different.
