From whitwood at fairpoint.net Wed Oct 1 21:02:06 2008 From: whitwood at fairpoint.net (Marcia Berkall) Date: Wed, 01 Oct 2008 21:02:06 -0400 Subject: [Woodcarver] Wednesday Woodcarver Chat Message-ID: <20081002010207.A0C431BFC0D@smtp0.av-mx.com> Join in on the fun!!! For informative and fun REAL TIME conversations with a number of the carvers on "The List", come to the Woodcarver chats. We don't always talk about carving, but if anyone has a question or comment, we can get serious in a hurry. Get to know the people behind the names. And bring you carving questions with you!!! We meet on Wednesday nights at 9:30 PM Eastern and on Sundays at 4:30 PM Eastern. If you are NOT using an IRC chat program, I think you will like these simplified instructions!!! Just click on one of the links below...either will take you directly to #Woodcarverchat http://www.starlink-irc.org/java/java_williamslake.html?chan=#Woodcarverchat http://www.starlink-irc.org/java/java_stopover.html?chan=#woodcarverchat This may take a LONG time to load!!!!!!! Don't give up. When it finally does load, you will be asked to type in a nickname.....then click connect, and wait a little bit longer. The chat screen will open. Type something in the narrow horizontal space just below the chat screen and hit you enter key. Nothing to it! :) If you are using WebTV or still have trouble getting there, one of these links will work...we just save them as a last resort in case all other links don't work: http://63.79.14.90/cgi-bin/irc.cgi http://cobra-ip1.vipershells.com/cgi-bin/irc.cgi http://stopover.ky.us.starlink-irc.org/cgi-bin/irc.cgi (This one will have the fastest connection) Type in a nickname where it says"nickname"i Where is says, "channel", type in #woodcarverchat (don't forget the #). ******* If you are using an mIRC chat program: 1. Log onto your ISP. 2. Open mIRC. You should see a box "mIRC Options". If you don't then click on View then on "Options" Fill in the information there...you do NOT have to put in your real name or email address. For security purposes, make them up. Do put in the nickname you want and an alternative. 4. Click on the button with the sunburst icon, just to the right of the button that says, "Connect to Server". Where it says "IRC Network", scroll down until you see "Starlink-IRC" and highlight that so it shows in the window. There is also a Starlink network, so make sure that the one you select has the "IRC" after it. Now click on the arrow next to the IRC server window. That will list a number of Starlink-IRC servers....select one of them. The Starlink-IRC random server will automatically pick one of the servers for you, so you can use that one. With one of the Starlink-IRC servers in the window, click on "Connect to Server" If the Starlink Random Server is not in your mirc program you can add it: Click the "add" button. Where it says "Description" type "Starlink Random Server" Where it says "IRC Server" type IRC.STARLINK-IRC.ORG Port should be 6664,6665,6666,6667,6668,6669 (all of those with no spaces between them) and "Group" is Starlink-IRC 5. Once connected, you'll see lots of scrolling text. When that stops, type /join #Woodcarverchat in the window at the bottom and hit your "enter" key. (you need the / and #, and Woodcarverchat must be spelled exactly right) I have put these instructions on a web page with direct links at http://artwebmaine.com/woodcarverchat.html You may want to bookmark it. ******* See you there! If you get to the chat and nobody is there, please come back in a little while. Sometimes, especially on holidays and when weather is particularly nice, people are more apt to be a little late. See you there!*** Join in on the fun!!! As I am just north of you sometimes we have the same types of weather. Any wood that I keep and store in the round I store under my house on blocks and green wood that I rip and then store I also put under my house but on blocks and then stickers. My house is built on pilings or piers and is skirted so I have all this open space, about 4' from ground to plywood covered joists. I have ventilation so there is, at times, a nice draft flowing. No sunlight or light at all. I had put some red cedar, yellow cedar, spruce and hemlock under there about 10 years ago and it's just as bright, but now dry, as the day I put them under there. Rule of thumb, 1 year to dry for every inch of thickness. You want to keep as even temperatures as possible and nothing very hot. If your garage is not heated that might be ok but maybe keep direct sunlight away from it. Hope this helps..... Through the convergence of circumstances (luck is a non-kosher word) I was finally able to start the project. It has been a remarkable blessing for me. I remember corresponding with Ivan Whillock on the subject of the Stations - he's done at least one series - to try and sort out the traditions surrounding the stations. That was quite a few years ago, and I believe I still have the notes resulting from my research into the subject. As a devotional aid, the stations of the cross have a long history. There aim is to direct the devout Christian to the cross where such a great battle was fought and won. The term "excruciating" comes from the Latin and contains the idea of passing "through the cross". Thus the Stations depict the cost of passing through the cross to accomplish salvation. My carving students have an particular interest in this project, since a number of them posed for series as models. As the series progresses, they gain a sense of the process of relief carving - from concept through design to the finished work - that is unavailable through books. I'm started number 10 yesterday and hope to have it finished by Thursday next week. Bill "See if you can count your blessings..." I will continue to be a regular subscriber to this List, for sure, and you will see my postings from time to time. Now for the announcement of who will be the new List owner.... It is the one and only Matt Kelley - womeditor at comcast.netLook forward to his initial postings, which I'm sure will inform you all on his vision for the future of this List. Till then, thank you all, my friends, and God's rich blessings to you. BillFormer List Owner "See if you can count your blessings..." You have done a masterful job on it, both keeping it running smoothly and free from smut etc..... I know when I had heart surgery in 1998, the first thing I did every morning was check the messages from the woodcarver list. I commented at the time and still feel that way "It is like a letter from home"....... Enjoy your time away from the list and keep turning out those wonderful carvings. Matt will do a wonderful job, continuing in your fine tradition. Hopefully this will happen over the weekend, and without any disruption to List postings. Each and every subscriber currently on this List will continue to be subscribed, as the List is simply changing hands, not starting over again. In fact the new owner uses the same ISP as the List and is able to have the List transfered to his account from mine. Sweet! This List was started roughly 12 years ago and has been attached to 4 List servers over that time. The current List Server, located at Pair.com, has been essentially trouble free and completely reliable. I expect the same quality service for the new owner. It has been an immense privilege to be owner/administrator for this List over the years. Through the List I've been able - like yourselves - to be connected to hundreds of carvers world-wide, sharing ideas, encouragement and friendship. Without this List my experience as a carver would have been isolated from the rest of the carving community. I've considered this List to be a gift to me from God and thus worthy of good stewardship. My hope is that the List prospers under the hand of another good steward. I want to thank each and every carver with whom I've had the privilege to meet and know over the years for your friendship and camaraderie.
