Donna:
I've wanted to do this series for two decades. Through the convergence
of circumstances (luck is a non-kosher word) I was finally able to
start the project. It has been a remarkable blessing for me.
I remember corresponding with Ivan Whillock on the subject of the
Stations - he's done at least one series - to try and sort out the
traditions surrounding the stations. That was quite a few years ago,
and I believe I still have the notes resulting from my research into
the subject.
As a devotional aid, the stations of the cross have a long history.
There aim is to direct the devout Christian to the cross where such a
great battle was fought and won. The term "excruciating" comes from
the Latin and contains the idea of passing "through the cross". Thus
the Stations depict the cost of passing through the cross to
accomplish salvation.
My carving students have an particular interest in this project, since
a number of them posed for series as models. As the series progresses,
they gain a sense of the process of relief carving - from concept
through design to the finished work - that is unavailable through books.
I'm started number 10 yesterday and hope to have it finished by
Thursday next week.
Bill
