From albisso at bresnan.net Mon Sep 1 12:47:00 2008 From: albisso at bresnan.net (Alex Bisso) Date: Mon, 1 Sep 2008 10:47:00 -0600 Subject: [Woodcarver] Ed's new postings References: Message-ID: <002201c90c52$5ac17810$6501a8c0@Alex> Hi Ed. I was again impressed by your carving prowess - you do such a good job. All of the pieces in your 2008 album were great but I especially liked the fleur de lis on the armoire. Is there a particular reason why you chose that decoration for the armoire? Also, since there does not appear to be an "A"I in your name, I am also wondering about the "A" carved on the top front of it. If it is not too personal I would like a bit of insite into your creation of the design for it. You do not have to sign up early, just come, register and jump into a class. Check it out at http://www.camperjohn.com/GOW08_main.html . Last week was the Sandwich Fair. My apprentices and I had a large display booth where we demonstrated from Wednesday through Sunday. I began working on a large relief (24 X 60) of the Last Supper. It is all one piece of mahogany that was lumbered out by hand with a chain saw about 20 years ago. The fellow who lumbered it out was very skilled. The thickness ranged only from 2-1/4 to 1-3/4 over the entire 76-inch length. A missionary brought it back from Guatemala and gave it to me about 5 years ago. It had only a slight bow before I began. Carving the background from the heart side, to about a 1-inch depth, has removed all the bow. I plan to keep the chainsaw marks on the back to preserve the history of the board. Normally my Last Supper scenes include the backdrop of the upper room. On this one the figures are raised from the background about 1 inch and I plan to carve faces of modern-day saints and modern-day people in shallow relief throughout the entire background. There's a lot of stuff I have to take to the Sandwich Fair Grounds, where we moved the GOW. We still have room for more. Come and join us. Message-ID: <69C86E2A-67FA-41C1-B56E-AE51C0A524E2@sasktel.net> Gentle Carvers: I've got to admit it, and I expect to have a lot of company in this admission... I did no carving all summer. Once my June Relief Carving workshop was over, Deb and I headed to the lake where we spent the better part of 9 weeks enjoying the lake and the outdoors. There I built decks, shingled a roof and puttered at various tasks throughout the summer. We also had a lot of guests. But fall is here, and my carving classes have resumed, and I am really enjoying being back in the shop. My carvers are keen to take on new projects and to visit with their classmates. Some of the new projects are quite innovative, I must say. As for me, I am continuing my "Stations of the Cross" project. Right now I am near the end of station 3, with only eleven left to go. Each station is unique, drawn from photos I have taken of live subjects, so this project will not be an adaptation of someone else's work. I can't wait to show you all the finished series. I did however find time to carve and work on my new books. During my leave I had what I call an age epiphany and came to realization that woodcarving is not just something I love to do but something I need to do, without it ??.I just wouldn?t be me. Needless to say I am working on several projects and building new ideas for future projects. One such project is a new digital pattern & carving book called ?Carving Canadian History? which I am very excited about. If you have ever been to the Canadian Parliamentary Library and studied the carvings you would be amazed at the details and hidden woodcarvings that sit in the shadows of the Library. The CrarverSharp system (which nobody seems to have) has a similar set up. They used square tubing , one sliding inside the other , actually two setups, one that dropped down below the bench level? to handle longer tools and the other just? at bench level. Actually the basic CarverSharp itself looks quite similar to the unit you have except the lower pulley/wheel is much smaller and they managed to construct it in such away that the belt and platten are even with the frame holding the motor at the bottom pulley. As I said previously I have discovered how that can be achieved on your type of unit, rather simple solution, if you want I can send a pic showing how...not my invention just a pic I found while surfing.(G) Also I found pics of another jig that seems to do the job of holding the tool on your type of unit. It started off it's life as a jig for sharpening gouges on a Delta belt sander, but a slight modification made it usable on your type of unit. I can send pis of it as well if you are interested. BTW I noticed you use to list your location as Colchester now it's Harrow, have you moved or just a name change for your local area? Thanks again for taking the time to post pics of your jig, looks like a handy jig. Much appreciated. Gord. Is it possible to see some pics of? the jig you created for sharpening carving palm and mallet tools? As I remember one of the short comings of? unit carried by Lee valley? was that any fair sized (over 1" wide) gouges/chisels had to be sharpened high up on the belt as the unit frame projected out past the belt and prevented any movement across the belt to the left side on the lower portion of the belt (down near the large wheel/pulley), to me it made about half the length of the belt and platten unusable for large tools ? This drawback and also what I considered as too high a rate of speed of the unit was the reason I got rid of the one I had purchased from Lee Valley many years ago, of course I have since discovered how I could have got around the belt and frame problem, aah too soon old too late smart.(G) Even though I don't have that particular unit anymore? I would still be interested to seeing what kind of a jig you made up for the palm and mallet tools, if possible. I've sent this private as you can't send pics to the list. TIA Gord. The Denny system seems to be overkill for the job at hand. I don't think I like the way the tool handle sits in a cup.? With the handle perched on a pin I have great control of tool pressure and location on the belt.? I've never had a problem with short tools on my grinder since I don't have any palm tools with blades wider than 1" (do they exist?) and there is plenty of clearance for my 1-1/2" wide longer blades.? The jig I use is simple, quick and accurate to set at any bevel angle I want.? I did have one tiny little tool that I had to make an extended pin jig to grind but that was no problem.? I never power strop (a real quick way to round over a bevel) so the belt runs into the tool. The Carvesharp looks interesting but I do most of my woodworking with hand tools and use the grinder on many blades other than just carving tools so I like the other jigs available from Viel.? As I mentioned before, sharpening anything from kitchen knives to scissors at accurate and repeatable bevel angles is very quick and easy. Thanks for the photos Gord. One shows the jig up close mounted with a palm tool positioned, another pic shows how the jig is actually mounted to the unit using the slot provided to mount the platform your unit comes with. The last pic shows how a extra piece of shaped metal is attached to the platten so the belt runs out farther from the original platten position and brings the belt surface out so there is a clear space on the left hand side of the belt on the lower portion of the platten. As I suggested previously any tool over 1" wide couldn't be sharpened down that low on the platten, maybe this is not a real problem for some people but it must have been to some individuals , me included otherwise the modification wouldn't have been made.(G) Again I don't think any of these should be posted on web sites, just for personal use only. I believe the machine is still being manufactured. While more expensive than the "other" 1 in belt machines, it has several advantages: 1. a small 2" pulley on the motor with an idler pulley instead of the 6" pulley on the "other" machine. This results in a much slower belt speed with less possibility of burning or over grinding small tools. 2. an adjustable arm for setting the grinding angle and assuring you get the tool back to the same angle each time you check your grinding progress. This is the biggest advantage for me. I use a digital angle gauge with it to set the angle. They are available now in the $30 range. they work best on straight shanks but with some experimenting you can figure out how to compensate for bent shanks. With the angle gauge I can set angles to 1/10 of a degree accurracy. The problem now is knowing what the "right" angle is. When I first got the angle gauge I checked many of my gouges and found that when I was setting them by eye and thinking I was following what the manufacturer had used, I now had angles from 14 to 25 degrees on my tools. Course this was after many sharpening's on each tool so there is no telling what angle the manufacturer oginally used. I know theoretically it also varies with what wood you are using it on etc, but for softwoods and with the ability to re sharpen quickly and easily, I want the smallest angle I can get without breaking the edge off too often. I suspect that the manufacturer is a little conservative on his angle and that the angle set at the factory varies with the quality of the steel used. So the "right" angle may vary for each line of tools. Larry in his response mentions 18 degrees as an example. Since getting the angle gauge 9 months ago, I have been using 20 degrees for most gouges with a few down to 16 degrees to "test". Mark your calendar for GOW 2009, the week of September 21, 2009. Put http://www.camperjohn.com/GOW08_main.html in your favorites for exciting news as we plan for GOW 2009. Thanks to our GOW Hosts for all their hard work. I'm so glad to hear GOW 2008 went so well in spite of me having to miss it this year. :o) I want to thank everyone who signed the walking stick that was brought back by my buddy Rick. I appreciate all your kind thoughts and prayers. The surgery went very well and I'm fully on the mend. I also want to thank all you who weren't at the GOW for your concern. It's nice to have such a wonderful family out there pulling for you. Is the title of the book "Soap Carving For All Ages"? May I suggest carving sweet potatoes instead of soap. Soap is very messy. Sweet potaotes can be carved easily with a paring knife. Clean up is easy. They can also eat the parts they cut off. Sweet potatoes take on a very unique look after several months of drying and shrinking. Joe Dillett The Carving Shop 645 E.
