Mush, I had the good fortune of meeting Livio. He is a most polite,
gentle, skilled showman!!! Livio's waxed mustache is part of the
show (smiling). He speaks his native tongue, Italian ...his wife
speaks English. Communication across language barriers, through hand
gestures is more obvious. He is a wonderful performer with his
gestures (as you can imagine). Livio's carving studio is no more
than a large closet at his art studio. Actually, he had few
woodcarving tools in his shop. There may have been 10-20. I think
the more skilled the woodcarver the less tools they use.
I was so humbled with meeting Livio. I really wanted to ask how he
carved the pages of his books that he is so noted for. BUT Livio was
so smitten with the fan bird & the research we've done ...that is all
we talked about. He studied the demos I carry with me & asked all
sorts of questions (through his wife). I gave him a fan bird and he
gave me a carved book which I absolutely cherish.
When I departed, I wandered along the canals trying to sort out what
had just happened. It was quite an experience.
I hope you get to meet him someday.
Best
Sally
