I wondered why there is a piece of metal on the back of the wooden ones.

Don't anyone forget about the National Electrical Code !!!!
Combustibles are not allowed in an electrical box !
Put a piece of metal on the switch side between your wood and the switch.
DON"T be responsible for a fire.
