Donna and others,
I have bought thin squares of aluminum sheeting for flashing at my local
hardware shop. I think a couple of years ago I paid 10-15c each for the
sheets. It is about 3 thous thick, easily cut with sharp shears or even
a utility knife. This will protect your switch plates and guard against
fire. It's true a single spark isn't likely to catch a piece of
basswood, but excess heat lowers the combustion point of wood and
multiple sparks from a frayed wire certainly could start it burning. I
like to err on the side of caution, the fire code was written for a good
reason based on history.

PS: Donna, I understand you will be up our way to give a couple of
classes at the end of june! That's great, I'm looking forward to seeing
you.
