[Woodcarver] Water Based Stains

Lately I have been using mostly water based stains to finish my
carvings. I really like the low odor and easy clean up. However, the
water based stains that I have are pigment based and they do not tend
to get quite the rich depth that some of the penetrating oil based
finishes I've used give. This can really help in getting an even
finish, but sometimes I would like some more depth to the finish.

So here's my question: has anyone used a water based stain that
produces a finish with rich depth? If so, what was it and where might
I find some?

I know we have touched on this subject before, but it seems like that
was quite a while ago.
