[Woodcarver] Dyes for wood

I've had some success using the brand Dylon fabric dyes on wood, 
especially Maple. These dyes are readily available at fabric stores. I 
followed the instructions at the link below rather than those which are 
packaged with the dye.

Has anyone ever tried using food coloring as a dye for wood?
