Hi Jim,
I usually lurk on the list but you lit a fire under me.-----After more than 30 years selling at shows and selling to and through stores I have had some real "learning experiences"
I always keep prices at the same level---Web site, show, stores etc.? If I am consigning I will not consign to 2 stores in the same town.?? I have done craft shows within a few miles of shops I have items in and I am very careful to keep the price the same.
If you have a chance to consign at 25% it is a very good rate.? The store should have a very clear agreement or contract for you.? In most states the title to?consigned items goes from you to the buyer.? That means you need to make sure your contract or your own insurance protects you.? I had one store one time did not want to be responsible for shoplifting---my answer was- if You control it you are responsible---what happens when you have trouble meeting your bills ??? all of a sudden it was stolen -not sold?? I removed my items right away--three months later this shop was having money trouble and was not paying some of their crafter's.
Shows can be very expensive but can do well for you.? If I am considering a show I like to check it out before I put out my money.? I like to spend a couple of hours in the parking lot and watch what people are carrying out of the show.? Are a lot of people carry items they bought?? Or?are only 1 or 2 people carrying out items??? Then I like to try to catch a few crafter's and try to find out if it's a good show for them, and what price point sells best.? Is the average sale $2, $25, or $50??? Remember what constitutes a good show for one person is not always what you would think a good show is.? I base a show on what the percentage of sales cost is.?? If I pay $300 for a show fee and then pay $300 more for a room and travel expense.? I need to sell at least $2400 to come out at 25%--? If I don't count anything for my time.? Additionally you have expense for your display booth, if you take credit cards (more fees),?
All things considered I sometimes ask why I try to sell, but I think the real reward is having someone value your work enough to actually pay money for it.
I think I am beginning to ramble. so I will quit for now if I can help with any specifics feel free to contact me.
