Subject: Response to Your Question on Church Doors
Hi Bob,
Thank you for your comments on the Church Doors. I've asked our son, Bill Anderson, to respond to your question about routing the backgrounds on the panels. Bill donated alot of time and his talents in moving the project from finished art to the hand carving stage. It's important to note that without his expertise, the project would not even have been accepted. FYI, all work on the panels was donated.
Your request: "It would be extremely interesting seeing the jig/fixture you guys used in settting up the router to cut out the background."
Bill"s response:
There were no jigs used in the routing stage. The entire roughing out process was done on an industrial CNC (Computer Numerical Control) Router. The original drawings were scanned into a computer , scaled to the finish size ,and simplified into the basic outlines, then the various depths of the roughing out were decided to create the relief and raised areas. Using Auto Cad software, the router cutting paths were drawn and then that information was translated into a numeric code that feeds the machine and tells it where to move the router bit to hog out the bulk of the material.
The blanks were placed on a large vacuum table that held them in place and the router then moved itself into position and routed out each blank. Drawing all of the router paths and writing the code to feed into the machine took some time to do for each piece, but the actual time it to rough out each blank was only about 20 minutes. It could have gone faster but we ran it slow to minimize the chipping of the wood.
Below is a link video of a machine similar to the one used. This one is routing parts for cabinet doors but it will give you the general idea of how it was done.

John - First of all, my compliments on the church doors. It would be extremely interesting seeing the jig/fixture you guys used in settting up the router to cut out the background.

Merry Christmas to all.
Thanks to all who have unselfishly shared pictures and info on their work during the year. It's my turn to share. I have updated my Picturetrail site and created a new album to include pictures of carvings completed this fall. Find them in the "New Carvings" album through the link below.
Best wishes for the holidays and the new year,
