hey all well im sorta a newbie been on here butmostly just watching and reading. Cory where you at in Iowa ? Im a former Iowan lived in West Des Moines then moved out here to Az. used to live in Phx but have moved north to a small town called Yarnell. am on SSD after haveing 9 yes 9 heart attacks,, tried to go back to work, but as the old saying goes sh-t happens and found out i couldnt . so no other option. now im trying to learn wood carving. used to have a furniture restoration business so am somewhat familar with woods but this carving business is a totally differnt ball game. I first started out wanting to do just gunstock carving but have been trying to expand my intersts to other carving work. This last summer i did a Indian head bust out of a 15 lb block of walnut,, turned out really well and my neighbor who used to work for Disney as a carver said it was very good and would have valued it at over $1000, anyway i
sent it to my daughter for a Xmas present, would you believe that the PO in her town got broke into and now all the police and PO inspectors say they can find it even tho the guy who did the breakin turned himself in the next day,, something smells here lol. Yea i had it insured but am being told that i have to prove how much i paid for the wood and all the red tape the govt throws at you. Am so upset over this it was a one of a kind. almost made me want to give up on doing anymore carving work. In fact i did for awhile and now trying to get back into it. Now im looking for any roughouts i can get ahold of to get back into the swing of things have some hand tools and power carveing tools. i enjoy htis alot as it keeps me busy and the mind from thinking about this heart stuff, had a ICD implanted 5 years ago and now might have to go in and get it changed out the battery is whereing down,, they dont just replace the battery
they do the whole unit,, its not a big deal usuallu in and out the same day if everything goes ok but sometimes they like to keep you over night. I have one the best Ep drs around very good and nice, doesnt talk down to ya and is always friendly, he even brought me a bottle of red wine the kind he drinks, whooopss sorry i didnt like it but told him different lol. i do like red wine tho but just not his brand lol. anyway if anyone can offer assistance and help it would be very much appreciated. I think have better luck at doing larger pieces than the small stuff even tho i would like to do smaller items snce its winter up here and cant really do my carving work outside, i live in my Rv so all i have for cover is the awing. Thanks for reading and give a shout sometime. Sincerely, John in Az

Haven't received a post from the list other than the Chat notices. What's
everyone up to? Am I not getting emails or has it been this slow?

I have been busy teaching my class, carving miniature wolves, doing antique
restoration work and carving a memorial plaque in aspen for a deceased hunters
family. Wondering now if I should paint or stain or some combination of the
two. Of course my back has chosen this particular week to go out on me,
never had a problem before, I hope it isnt a foreboding of my future. Feeling a
bit dopey on the meds they've given me. Always busy lately but always
listening in.

knife so far! Take care,

Well, getting ready for a long carving week and show in the Valley has given me lots to do for the past few weeks. New class is the full-sized hummingbird with inserted tail feathers. I made a 17 page instruction booklet in color with illustrations and patterns for my students to start with. Then I was making go-bys when someone wanted one for a present- so there went my example. Then I got the 'brilliant' idea to make some of these out of hardwood- like I do the hummer pins. Weeeelllll- easier said than done. I put together one in lacewood and one in figured maple yesterday- and it wasn't easy. Today I'll put some oil on them and they should look real good- if not, then I've wasted a lot of time and energy and fingerprints. Next time I will consider using power instead of only my hands.
Meanwhile, a lady ordered more than $200 of the hummer pins blanks in a bunch of different hardwoods- Amboina burl to zebra, and even one in ebony. After cutting all those out I decided to make a few to sell and to promote the blanks. Again with hand power I did 6, with one each in Redwood burl, Amboina burl, Box Elder, Ambrosia maple, lacewood, and koa. I'm looking forward to putting some finish on them today- they should be pretty.
So, between making copies of instructions, cutting out blanks and sanding my little heart away I've been as busy as possible. Funny- it takes 2 weeks to prepare for a one week class, and then 2 weeks afterwards to recover. Ya gotta love it.
