You should check the toxicity of antlers when sanded.

Hi Evan -
I've never carved antler before, but you might find that a wood stain
will give you better coloring of the antler material. Try it out on
a carved scarp piece of antler. Brush on well, then wipe off the
high parts of the relief, leaving the stain in the valleys. Control
the darkness by the amount of time you leave the stain on, and the
degree you wipe it off. Matt
