Tonight we had the very first monthly meeting of the brand new Staten
Island Woodcarvers club. It has been a pet project of mine to get one started
for awhile now and I have to say it was a great success. We had 13 members
attend. We discussed the goals of our club, first and foremost to be for
friendship, to promote woodcarving and for education and networking
purposes. We then voted on our official club name. We made plans to have an
announcement placed in our local paper. It is to be free, non political, no
work, no commitments and open to all carvers, burners, scroll saw and lathe
artists, marquetry, stone carvers and fine furniture builders. We went around
and did introductions and then had a show and tell. I am very happy that
all went well and I couldn't be happier with our location. It was held in
a local church parish house. The building was beautiful, almost 150 years
old and kept in pristine condition. It is situated on 144 acres of parkland
which includes one of the oldest cemeteries in the country. It is the
family cemetery of the wealthy Vanderbilt family so of course it was also
quite beautiful. We will be meeting on the 1st wed of every month.
