Hello all,
There is a great way to turn plates, platters on the lathe and save the large expense for a chuck.

Attach a round wooden disc (3" diameter, 1.5" thick or so) to your faceplate.
Flatten the outer flat surface using your lathe.
Rough cut the plate blank you wish to turn.
Using white or yellow glue, attach the plate blank to the wooden disc on your faceplate sandwiching a piece of brown paper bag between your plate and the wooden disc.
After turning the plate use a chisel to separate the plate from the disc. The brown paper bag allows for easy separation. Scrape and sand smooth.
For small plates, try hot glue to cut down on the wait time for your glue to dry.

For turning an occasional plate, this is another option.
This Dutchman likes to save some $$$.

Make some chips,
Marty

Hi Pat,

I guess my first place to start would be are you wanting to do platters for chip carving? If answer is yes than you want to think about a chuck that holds a tenon that is easier to sand off than the other way which is where the chuck jaws set on the inside edge of a recess not usually seen on platters that are chip carved. Then you have to decide how much money you want to spend cause you can get some that are very reasonable but take a little extra work to get them on the wood correctly (some you need to grow about 8 hands), others just one hand but they all range in price. That is why I suggested looking at the national website for a chapter(club) that might be close to you.

But watch out cause if you think carving is addictive, the lathe is worse trust me, the husband says I could be gone for years and never know how long I have been gone lol.
