Mike,
If it were basswood, that would be my first choice, but not butternut. The
grain and wood color is too special.
I have seen butternut carvings where non-brown areas are painted
have a
Clydesdale by Anita Karl done that way. I always thought that technique
would work well on a whitetail deer.

This is for my oldest daughter on her wedding. Yep. The fiancée is supposed
to carve this, but she requested it. Secretly I don't think she trusts me
to instruct him with sharp objects ;-). This is almost ready for satin
polyurethane. Mostly done with a knife... maybe 90%.
