Jan:

Interesting questions. Thank you for asking.

Re: Question 1.
On January 1st, I started looking for a job. And I found one. Since
January I've been employed part time at our church, doing custodial
duties - otherwise known as the Ministry of Bathrooms and Vacuums -
and I am quite enjoying the work.

I have not had a carving commission since May 2008. It is like the
"well dried up". When September came around, I promised Debbie that I
would finish the "Stations of the Cross" project (http://www.wwwoodcarver.com/Home/Stations_of_the_Cross.html
) and then find a job in the new year. I kept my promise, crafted a
resumé, and distributed it to prospective employers. This is the first
time in 26 years I was actively seeking work that was not carving
related. In other words, God provided a living for me in woodcarving
all these years. It is my firm conviction that "no well dries up
without both His knowledge and His permission".

So the last three months I have divided my working hours between
carving classes (they are FULL and thriving) and custodial work, plus
a few other odd and interesting jobs I've picked up... like building
low-end websites for local businesses.

Over the last 26 years I've always been amazed that I was able to make
a living as a wood carver. God is so generous.

At this point, I am still in the position to accept carving
commissions, should they come to me. But I am not counting on them for
my source of income. And I am greeting the change in lifestyle with
enthusiasm and vigor. So far the family finances are good, and so is
my health and energy.

Re: Question 2:
When I made a living from carving, I put my money into the family
income bucket and also bought whatever tools were needed (and a few
that were not) to make a living. But I spent almost nothing on beer!!!
