Thanks Kathleen for recalling the days when we had 50+ emails daily and Bill was so excited in getting new members that he listed them daily and where they were from. I joined in 1995-96 and we learned daily about all levels of creative art in design to carving. I still enjoy seeing your work presented quarterly. Just keep the emails coming; learning is forever.

Hello, All.
Some asked last Friday if there were any burning questions on carving, and I have one for you.
I recently found on eBay a carving by Jack Drake for sale at $20,000., I believe. He is credited in the write-up for inventing in 1972 the use of pyrography for detailing his carvings. Apparently before that, no one had thought to do that, and if you wanted to detail your carvings in any other way besides carving them, you painted them, and these painted carvings were called "slicks," and, I suppose, still are.
Is there anyone in this group who remembers painted carving techniques before 1972 and can talk about the beginnings of pyrography for detailing after 1972? I would be most interested to include some oral history in my next Pyrograffiti article. Please write to me directly (rather than to the list) at
pyroart_emuseum at yahoo.com. I would be most grateful.
I joined the Northern Virginia Carvers for the first time in 1978 as their guest speaker on pyrography, and what I brought to show them was definitely something new for them. I had no idea then that even detailing was something rather "new" for them.

Re the great numbers of messages that were recently complained about, remember when this group was first started (I joined in the fall of 1996)? That was before there was the digest alternative, and we were getting about 50+ emails a day!!! We were all so excited about everything new on the internet back then and had so much fun. It was a bit obssessive, but still.... Even then some complained about the numbers and/or the chat, but most of us just gave our advice to hit DELETE if you didn't want one, remember? Those were the days....

Best regards,
