[Woodcarver] Question about flying with carving tools?

Hi Jantu,

I fly with carving tools all the time and what people are saying is true.

We have a considerable investment in our tools so I also suggest that you check into additional insurance. My business insurance, for no additional cost, puts an extra $1,000 insurance on my tools when I travel. I have not checked into Homeowners or Renters insurance to see if for a small extra charge you can get your tools insured. I think it would be worth a phone call. Imagine if your tools got lost how much it would take to replace them.

If your tools get lost or rerouted the airlines have time, I think 30 days, to locate them before any insurance can be collected. If you are traveling to teach a seminar and your tools arrive a few days late it would really put you in a bind. I checked into purchasing on-time insurance to insure that the tools would be there in time for the seminar and it was too costly so, in those cases, I ship them UPS insured for next day. It's also a bit costly but worth the peace of mind.

I will be taking a trip to Los Angeles in a few weeks and would like to know how do you take carving tools on an airplane.
Is it more trouble than it's worth? I could call the airlines and find out, but thought I'd get the group's experiences, if any.

Sincerely, Jantu
