Hi Joe,
Wow,  I thought I put my 788 through a workout!  Can I use that as a testamonial when I tell people how great they are at Rockler's?  hehe.  We've started a scroll saw group with the first meeting last month. 44 people showed up so there is interest.

Hi Larry,

The reason I got my DeWalt 788 was I got a job to cut out small leaf designs in 3/4-inch thick oak plywood for a church that was being renovated. There were 9 of these panels that went around the sanctuary behind the altar. Each panel was 8-foot high by 3-foot wide. I made a large table, from counter top material, that clamped to the existing saw's work table. The large table needed floor supports on both ends to stabilize it. There were thousands of small cut-outs where both ends of the blade had to be disconnected and fed through the next hole. Over the 4 weeks that we worked on them Tina, my apprentice, got a great leg workout from doing deep knee bends disconnecting and connection the lower portion of the blade thousands of times. As it turned out that was the most profitable job I did that year.

Since then the 788 had a lot of other challenges and all of them it came through with flying colors. Most of the work I do on it is too large to turn so I've just been using the spiral blades ever since I got it. I had a Powermatic scroll saw before the 788 that got donated to the boy scouts. The Powermatic is a toy compared to the DeWalt 788.

I've had my 788 for over 10 years now and it has seen a lot of use.  Besides "normal" use I have sawed out over 5,000 carving blanks froom 1 1/2" basswood.  I wouldn't hesitate a minute buying another.

Hi Ned,

I have a DeWalt 788 and love it. I bought mine about 4 years ago on Ebay, including stand, light and shipping for $375. It only had a few hours of use on it. It still looks and runs like new after many hours of use. I just checked out Ebay and saw new 'still in the box' DeWalt 788 from $218 and up. Also some stands. I wouldn't worry about buying a good used one because they are well designed.

I carve Celtic love spoons, many of which have pierced handles. I have been using a 10-year old Craftsman scroll saw to cut the handles, but the vibration and the difficulty getting blades positioned for interior cuts are aggravating. A scroll sawyer whose work I admired at a recent craft show recommended the DeWalt 788. I read the reviews of this saw on Amazon. Up through 2006, the reviews are uniformly quite favorable. Apparently they then moved their manufacturing site from Canada to Taiwan, after which there are some very negative reviews in 2007 describing gross manufacturing defects and quality control problems with DeWalt doing little to correct the reported problems.  However, the most recent 2009 reviews are once again favorable, suggesting they may have resolved their issues. Does anyone have any recent experience with these saws? I do not have a store nearby where I can actually inspect or test a saw before buying it.
The best currently available deal on the 788 is through Woodcraft. For about the same price as the other outlets they will throw in a stand and light and also ship free through March 31. I have had good experience with Woodcraft customer service so that might help. I would appreciate any advice.
