There may well be ways to make it stronger with a flue in block version that I just am unaware of. One thing I am learning in all my reading and experiementing is that there are as many ways to make these as there are makers. And you're correct - if you mess up the cut on the body - well, you're kinda stuck. I did that on one that I was trying from my own harvested bamboo and I am still trying to figure out if I can salvage it. Maybe by inlaying a new piece. Probably toss it though. So your in block version may well be better for a classroom situation. The key to cutting in body for me so far and slow and shallow cuts. You don't want the flue channel too deep anyway - so just sneak up on it.

Ah Master Po - not sure I can grasp the pebble from your hand yet. Thanks for your class and encouragement. This whole flute thing has sort of taken over my time so that carving has fallen by the wayside though. So I blame you! <g>

Didn't think you were misrepresenting - I just wondered if you'd been told it was all river cane by your supplier - in which case I may have been wrong in calling it bamboo. I don't recall but you may have had a mix in the bucket. And yes - cane would indeed be more authentic for NA Style flutes anyway. I also want to try (eventually) a transverse (side) blown flute - but these are much harder to play since they require you to make the embrochure with your lips - where the block flue and fipple (cutting edge) do that work for you with the NA style flute. Also - a Japanese style shakuhachi - but those are even trickier I understand.
Anyway - cheers mate! Keep the chips and the wind blown notes a flyin'.
