Ya know Chris, I was waffling between Emil Janel and Andy Anderson. Despite
the fact that Andy collaborated on a book which inspired Harold Enlow, I'm
going to second your vote for Emil because I think he had the greater
"range" for subjects and expressions. Shall we share a time machine and
visit him together? Would you mind <G>? If there's no room, I'll go solo
with my first pick in the "open" category. Gino Masero, also a woodcarver
with an incredible range. His carving of St. Francis of Assisi in Chris
Pye's book, "Elements of Woodcarving", haunts me.

Keep on Carvin'

Hi Matt,

My choice would be Tilman Riemenschneider (circa 1460-1531).

I'm fascinated with his detail to hair. He had at least four kinds of hair
techniques with varying degrees of density and curliness. Also, his
impeccable detail to facial emotional expression is amazing. How he can
show tearful eyes with his tools is phenomenal. Every time I look at the
his I see things I didn't see before. (smiling)

Best

Assume you could take your tools, crawl into the List Time Machine and go
back in time and space - with what great carver from the past would you like
to spend a week? Tell us why!
