Joe,
Blowing across the hole (embouchure?)is for the classic flute design. The
Native American style flute has a slow air and the flute body separated by a
wall. There is a channel under the totem (in this case the hawk) that takes
the air flow across to the whistle part (fipple). There a good explanation
and diagram at...

Hi Mike,

Awesome flute. I love the grain and the finish. Do you make the type where
you blow across the hole?

I'm still carving too, in-between throwing pots. I'm currently working on a
18-inch square butternut logo for DeKalb County Community Foundation. I
thought it was a challenge keeping the shop clean when I was just carving.
Now, with doing clay pottery there's fine clay dust all over everything.
Last week I started taking a clay sculpture class. It's very exciting.
