[Woodcarver] Open question to all

Before I moved here, I belonged to a very active Club that had instructors
come in 4 to 6 times a year, and a program or project the other months. Now
I belong to two carving groups, neither of which could be called a club. I
drive 20 miles one way to attend monthly meetings, we have no president, no
by laws & no dues. We have almost 30 people on our mailing list, with about
a dozen in attendance most meetings. We try to have a program or project
most months. The problem being there are a few people who do all the work,
with out them there would be no meetings. We just haven't been able to get
the others to help or even respond to requests for program ideas. The other
group is even more like a social club, 6 of us meet twice a month at my
studio, two of us Gray Beards help the newer carvers, but mostly we just get
together to carve & visit. I would like to see this group expand with a
couple more Gray beards, so we could start having programs. But that hasn't
happened yet.
Having said all that, I believe a social group needs 6 or 8
motivated people who are willing to work at making the group a club. They
all don't have to be Gray Beards, many of the club officers could be newer
carvers. Then you need another 8 or 10 people who care enough about carving
that they will do more than just show up on occasion. The rest could be
strap hangers, the more the merrier.
