[Woodcarver] A 2.5 sweep gouge ...

Hey Tom,

The Gonzalez Hooked Skew was a pretty good seller when we carried it. We had them in the 5/8” and 3/4” blades. Unfortunately when the dollar started shrinking on the European market and the Euro when the other way, the tools really went out-of-sight price wise. We’ll have to look into carrying them again when things calm down a bit.

Larry,

That would be it. I am also a fan of Ashley Iles' Ray Gonzalez hooked skew, but it is a tough tool to use in small spaces, or when doing hand carving.

Hi Tom,

The Stubai curved skew you mention… is that the one they call the SK oblique skew that has the rounded cutting edge? Stubai advertises it for doing chip carving and letter cutting, but the uses for it are considerable.

Thanks for your input.

Patti,

I have a 2.5 sweep in the 20 mm, which is a great smoothing gouge. I also have Stubai's curved skew, which is a great all around tool. Again, it's in the European size range, which I find great for both hand work and mallet work. I also like the right and left short bend skews for cleaning recesses.

Howdy again,

A while back we were talking about the very shallow sweeps on gouges and the
topic of something less than a #3 sweep came up.

I mentioned at the time that Stubai out of Austria makes a #2.5 gouge that
is flatter than a #3 but not absolutely flat like a chisel. I have since
found out they are available from 2MM (5/64") up to 35MM (1 3/8") in
Stubai's 8" Euro-style tools. Those are the ones that are a bit shorter
than the full-size 10", but still can be used with a mallet if necessary.

If anyone wants additional information on pricing, please drop me a note off
list so we don't clog up the mail. We're getting ready to place a stock
order the first of the week so it would be a good time to fill your needs.
At present we are going to treat the 2.5 sweep gouges as "special order"
items until we see a need developing for particular sizes, then we will
probably keep some in stock.

I hope this will be helpful for those of you who inquired earlier.

Thanks.
