Hi Maura,
Below are the rules as first set up. They have evolved for personal preference
so don't feel you must strictly adhere to them. Some carvers like a much more
informal atmosphere and don't like rules. :)
Blanket Trade
The blanket trade is a modern version of the trading routine followed by
the fur traders and Native Americans. A blanket is placed in the center of a
circle of chairs. Anyone who has brought something to trade sits in one of the
chairs. Interested onlookers, or those with cash to trade, are seated or can
stand in a row around the circle.
The first person to start the trading places his item for trade in the
center of the blanket. The person seated to his left has two choices. He may
place an item he is willing to trade on the edge of the blanket closest to him
or he may wave his arm across his knees and say “no trade”. Each person on the
left follows the same routine. After everyone in the circle has a chance to put
a trade item on the blanket, those standing may offer cash by placing the amount
offered on the edge of the blanket closest to him.
The person who put the item in the center of the blanket then carefully
examines each item offered in trade. If he sees nothing he wants, he picks up
his item and announces “no trade”.
If he sees an item he wishes to trade for, he picks up his item and gives
it to the person who brought the item he is interested in. That person picks up
his item and gives it to the first person. They shake hands and say “good
trade”.
Everyone who had placed an item on the blanket must now retrieve his or her
item from the blanket.
The person to the left of the first trader now places his item for trade in
the center of the blanket and the above routine is repeated.
When every person seated around the blanket has had an opportunity to place
an item in the center and make a trade, the trading is done for the day.
Side trades are allowed. If a trader desires something that someone has
either traded for or turned down, he may approach the person with the item and
offer a trade. Side trading takes place after the formal trading is finished.
Suggested items for trade:
Carving books, magazines
Tools
Wood
Blanks or roughouts
Carvings
Wood burnings
Handmade craft items
Any interesting object
Value of the items
Interesting trades can be made with items that do not have a high intrinsic
value but may be of interest to someone else. Items in all price ranges are
encouraged. Value is in the eye of the trader.
Hope this helps,
Sandie
